Report: U.S. government preparing to send illegal Dutch migrants to Guantanamo Bay
The American government is making preparations to send thousands of undocumented foreigners to the detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, the Washington Post has reported. Hundreds of these migrants are from European countries like the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, and Germany. The article does not state how many Dutch people are in this group.
These people are accused of living in the U.S. illegally. According to the newspaper, Donald Trump’s administration has no intention of notifying the countries regarding the transfers to the American military base in Cuba.
The Washington Post was told about the plans and documents by government officials who wished to remain anonymous. The sources have said that the preparations being made are medical screenings of 9,000 people to see whether they are healthy enough to be sent to Guantanamo.
The first transfers could take place this week. According to Politico, the process may begin on Wednesday. The American news site reported that the migrants will be held at Guantanamo before they are deported back to their country of origin. It is unclear how long the migrants would stay at Guantanamo.
Trump announced in January that he wanted to lock up around 30,000 migrants in the controversial prison. At the time, the president described these people as “the worst criminal illegal aliens that are threatening the American people.” Migrants have been sent to Guantanamo in the last few months.
The facility, which opened after the terror attacks in 2001, was used for years to torture and hold terror suspects without trial. However, cells were being emptied under the previous two U.S. presidents. Just 15 people were detained at the facility under Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden.
