Quincy Promes will be jailed if he returns for his trial in the Netherlands, court says

The court of appeal will not be going along with footballer Quincy Promes’ request for him not to be arrested if he comes to the Netherlands. Promes, who is currently living in Dubai, wants to return to the Netherlands, but only if he is not jailed while awaiting the trial against him. The court of appeal in Amsterdam is not granting this request. "There will be no suspension of the detention order," the court said on Tuesday.

Promes (33) has been sentenced to six years in prison for alleged involvement in cocaïne trafficking and 18 months for stabbing his cousin. The cases have been joined together in an appeal, but it is not clear when they will be dealt with by the court.

The Netherlands has requested his extradition. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), the extradition is at an “advanced stage,” and progress is being made. However, the attorney general has said that they cannot put a timeframe on the extradition. “It is a sensitive subject. We should not force it.”

He emphasized that the OM wants to have Promes brought to the Netherlands “as quickly as possible.” The footballer is currently not in jail in Dubai, but he is also not allowed to leave the country.

According to Promes’ attorney, his client would very much like to travel to the Netherlands. “He wants to explain himself, but he also wants to continue his professional footballing career.” According to the lawyer, Promes currently has “several offers” from clubs inside and outside the Netherlands, but he could not give any more information regarding this.

Promes has played 50 times for the Dutch national football team. Last year, he signed a contract to play for United FC Dubai, who currently play in the second tier of the United Arab Emirates league. He is currently without a contract.

His former club, Spartak Moscow, reported in June 2024 that the contract of the former Ajax, FC Twente, Go Ahead Eagles, and Sevilla played had been terminated.
