Extradited footballer Quincy Promes arrives in Netherlands, immediately detained

Dutch footballer Quincy Promes arrived in the Netherlands Friday evening and was immediately taken into custody upon landing at Schiphol Airport, NOS reported. The 33-year-old was extradited from Dubai on a specially chartered flight arranged by the Public Prosecution Service (OM) and was escorted off the plane by officers from the Koninklijke Marechaussee.

Promes’s extradition follows his arrest in Dubai on June 12. The Amsterdam Court of Appeal ruled he must return to the Netherlands to serve prison sentences and denied his request to await appeal outcomes in freedom, citing a high flight risk. Advocate General Arend-Kees Kooij explained the use of a chartered plane was to ensure “appropriate and secure transport.” The Public Prosecution Service has not disclosed where Promes will be held following his arrival.

In February 2024, Promes was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison for trafficking about 1,362 kilograms of cocaine through the Port of Antwerp in 2020. The court found he orchestrated shipments disguised as sea salt containers, using encrypted messages under the alias “Fantasma” to coordinate logistics and payments.

In June 2023, Promes was also sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin during a family event in Abcoude in June 2020. The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a stolen necklace.

Both cases are currently under appeal, but the court rejected Promes’s request to remain free pending the outcome. Promes had stated he would only return if he would not be arrested upon arrival, a condition the court declined.

Promes has represented the Netherlands 50 times internationally. He was playing for United FC Dubai in the UAE’s second division when arrested. His career includes stints at Ajax, FC Twente, Go Ahead Eagles, Sevilla, and Spartak Moscow.
