Prosecutors target alleged drug profits of former Oranje international Quincy Promes
Dutch prosecutors are attempting to seize 8 million euros from former football international Quincy Promes, alleging the money was obtained through cocaine trafficking. During a confiscation hearing at a court in Amsterdam, prosecutors also requested that his 34-year-old cousin, Marylio V., repay 62,000 euros. Neither Promes, who is still being held in custody, nor V. attended the session.
Promes was handed a six-year prison sentence in February 2024 over his role in trafficking more than 1,350 kilograms of cocaine via the port of Antwerp.
The drug trafficking operation took place at the end of January 2020 and involved two cocaine shipments concealed in a cargo of sea salt aboard a container vessel arriving from Brazil. Customs authorities seized more than 712 kilograms, but traffickers succeeded in bringing 650 kilograms ashore. Prosecutors say the scheme generated 8 million euros in illegal proceeds for Promes.
Promes is still awaiting the outcome of appeal proceedings in both the drug trafficking case and a separate stabbing case linked to an incident at a party in Abcoude, for which he received an 18-month prison sentence.
The hearings before the appeals court in Amsterdam are set for November 30 and December 2. His co-suspect, V., has already been given a prison sentence of three years and eight months on appeal.
The defense team of Promes requested a delay in the proceedings, pointing to the fact that an appeal is still to come. Promes denies any involvement in cocaine smuggling. In the upcoming appeal, intercepted Sky ECC communications allegedly linked to him are expected to be a key element of the case. The court refused to grant a postponement. It stated that the previous judgment of the Amsterdam District Court remains the basis for the asset seizure proceedings concerning alleged drug profits.
The defense team for Promes will be given time to file written requests for further investigation in the period ahead. A date for the substantive hearing of the confiscation case has not yet been set.
Promes played a total of 50 games for the Dutch national side. He also played for Ajax, FC Twente, and Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands, while playing abroad for clubs like Sevilla in Spain and CSKA Moscow.
