Prosecutors: Suspect bombed Beverwijk Red Cross hospital ‘purely for the money’

A man arrested in connection with two explosions at the Red Cross Hospital in Beverwijk last November allegedly carried out the attacks “purely for the money,” prosecutors said during a court hearing Monday in Alkmaar, according to RTL.

The 39-year-old Tomasz K. was detained at the end of February on suspicion of involvement in two separate bombings that took place on November 25 and 26, 2023, at the hospital. The blasts raised alarm among hospital staff, patients, and nearby residents, creating ongoing concerns about safety in the area.

Earlier this year, in January 2024, the same hospital was targeted for a third time when another explosive device detonated, causing a fire. Three people had to be checked for smoke inhalation after that blast. Authorities arrested a different suspect, a 37-year-old man, shortly after this most recent attack.

The exact motives behind all three bombings remain unclear, although prosecutors said Tomasz K. admitted to his involvement in the two November incidents. “The man carried out the bombings purely for financial gain,” the public prosecutor told the court during the initial preparatory hearing.

The prosecutor opposed defense requests to have probation services assess whether K. could be released temporarily while awaiting trial. The court heard that a persistent sense of unease and insecurity remains among hospital personnel, patients, and local residents, “especially since it has emerged that the second explosion was apparently intended to be larger than the first.”

K. was present but chose not to speak during the brief hearing. He remains in pretrial detention until the next preparatory hearing scheduled for August 18. The date for the full trial has not yet been set.
