Shooting near Amsterdam secondary school leaves one hurt; Students sent running
A shooting in front of a secondary school in Amsterdam-Noord left one man injured on Tuesday afternoon. The 20-year-old victim was transported to an area hospital in stable condition, and police later released a description of two male suspects who were seen running from the area after the violent crime happened.
Gunshots rang out at about 2:40 p.m. on Gare du Nord, a street running between the Bredero secondary school and the Noord metro station. Several students were on the street or just leaving the school when the incident took place, and ran inside in a panic at the sight of the victim, according to local broadcaster AT5.
"Shortly after the report – around 2:45 p.m. – officers arrived at the scene. They found one injured victim on the street and immediately provided first aid. The man was taken by ambulance to the hospital in a responsive condition," police wrote in an update.
The two suspects were seen running west towards the park and sports fields under development a few hundred meters away. Police said both men wanted in connection with the shooting had a slight tan complexion.
One of the suspects stood approximately 1.70-meters in height, with sunken cheeks, and black hair with a short part. He was wearing a black hooded jacket, black pants, black shoes, and may have been carrying a black bag.
The second suspect was about 10 centimeters taller, and had a black moustache. He was wearing a black hooded jacket that may have been branded from The North Face. Witnesses said he was wearing tight black track pants, black gym shoes with white soles, and had a black shoulder bag.
Anyone who sees men matching the description of the suspects should contact police. People should not approach the men, police said on citizen alert system Burgernet.
Records show several ambulances were quickly dispatched to the Gare du Nord, along with a trauma team traveling by helicopter. Forensic investigators were also dispatched to the scene. About 30 minutes after the shooting, a police helicopter also began to circle the area. “Colleagues are on site and are currently investigating,” Amsterdam police said on Bluesky.
The ROC vocational school is located just a few steps east of the crime scene. The street is also lined with several residential high rises and a fitness center.
"The police have started an investigation and are calling on anyone who saw or heard anything to come forward," investigators wrote in a statement two hours after the shooting. Anyone with camera footage, including images from smart doorbells or dashcams, should share relevant footage with the authorities.
