One hurt in Amersfoort apartment fire; Also fires in Dongen, Alphen a/d Rijn

One person got hurt during a fire in an apartment complex on Vreeland in Amersfoort during the early hours of Monday morning. The blaze destroyed two apartments. Fires also raged at a car company in Alphen aan den Rijn and at commercial property in Dongen.

Veligheidsregio Utrecht, the regional security office that manages the emergency services, first reported the fire in Amersfoort at 3:37 a.m. The fire brigade responded in large numbers and twice scaled up their deployment.

Firefighters rescued four people and multiple cats from the burning apartment. One person was transferred to paramedics for treatment. Other residents of the building were evacuated.

Little more than an hour later, the Veligheidsregio reported that the fire had been extinguished. Two homes were damaged to the point of being uninhabitable. The other apartments were ventilated before residents could return.

The fire in Alphen aan den Rijn started at a car company on Hoorn during the early hours of Monday and was still burning at around 8:30 a.m. The fire brigade is at the scene with several units, Veiligheidsregio Hollands Midden reported.

The blaze is causing a lot of smoke, and the Veligheidsregio urged locals to keep their windows and doors closed and turn off their ventilation. Firefighters are taking periodic measurements to check for dangerous substances in the smoke.

Firefighters managed to keep the blaze from spreading to other buildings, but fire debris has ended up in the Rijnhaven-West and Rijnhaven-Oost districts. The Veiligheidsregio urged locals to wait for the debris to cool down before trying to clean it up.

In Dongen, a very large fire broke out at a company that processes leather, among other things, on Sunday night. Part of the solar panel-covered roof was on fire, causing foil particles to come loose from the solar panels and land on the ground up to 8 kilometers away.

The fire brigade allowed the building to burn down in a controlled manner. By 5:30 a.m., the blaze was under control.

Veiligheidsregio Midden- en West-Brabant warned locals that the foil particles from the solar panels could be sharp. It urged farmers in the areas to keep their animals in the barn for the time being and thoroughly inspect the animal feed and drinking troughs for possible glass particles.
