Police investigating whether fatal hit-and-run in Maasluis was intentional; Teen killed
The police are investigating whether a fatal hit-and-run in Maasluis on Sunday was intentional. An 18-year-old man was killed when a car with four men inside hit him and sped off. The police later arrested the four men in the car on suspicion of public violence and malsaughter.
“The investigation is still ongoing, and there is much speculation about it, but intent is one of the scenarios we are investigating,” a police spokesperson told the Telegraaf.
The collision happened at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday on Prins Mauritsstraat. The young victim from De Lier was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. He died there of his injuries. According to the newspaper, a person involved said on social media that an argument preceded the hit-and-run.
The police found the car involved in the crash in De Lier. They later arrested the four suspects, men from The Hague aged 18, 19, 20, and 23.
The 18-year-old victim was commemorated at the As-Soennah mosque in The Hague on Tuesday. Thousands of people attended. “His death has had a huge impact on our community,” Abdelhamid Taheri of the mosque told Omroep West. According to him, the young man still visited the mosque for Ramadan on Saturday evening. "It was very emotional, and a lot of young people came this afternoon. The way he died, in particular, has had a huge impact."
"I played football with him in De Lier and knew him since primary school. He really was a good guy," a friend of the victim told the regional broadcaster. "It is great to see that so many people came here this afternoon."
