Amsterdam police arrest suspect in stabbing of British tourist
A 23-year-old man from Rotterdam has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a British tourist in Amsterdam’s Red Light District nearly a year after the attack, police announced on Monday.
The stabbing occurred in the early hours of March 23, 2024, on the Korte Niezel. A British couple was walking back to their hotel after visiting a pub when a man approached them and offered to sell drugs. The couple declined, and a verbal altercation ensued. The woman pushed the suspect away, and when the British man intervened, he was stabbed.
“The victim collapses. The woman still runs after the suspect, but in vain,” police said in a statement at the time. The suspect fled into the crowded streets of the Red Light District, while the injured man was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.
Police launched an extensive investigation, analyzing footage from numerous security cameras in the area. In May, authorities released surveillance images of the suspect on their website and social media platforms, but no leads emerged.
It wasn’t until a September broadcast of the Dutch crime show Opsporing Verzocht that investigators received a crucial tip. The suspect’s whereabouts remained unclear for several more months, but on Feb. 25, authorities successfully located and arrested him.
The suspect appeared before a magistrate, who ordered him to remain in custody for at least 14 more days as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity.
Police described the case as “a very intense and violent incident.” The British tourist, who suffered severe injuries, spent several days in the hospital recovering.
