Dutch inflation rate falls back below 3 percent as energy price spike flattens

The 12-month inflation rate in the Netherlands fell to 2.9 percent in June, a stark contrast to the substantially higher rate of 3.5 percent measured in May, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) said on Wednesday. The flash estimate showed energy rates were still well above prices a year earlier, but the increase cooled off a bit compared to last month.

Consumers in the Netherlands might be surprised to learn that food, beverages, and tobacco prices remained level versus prices in June 2025. In fact, many costs likely fell slightly compared to May, the CBS said. Consumer prices dropped month-to-month by about 0.6 percent, where a seasonal decrease of 0.1 percent is the norm over the past decade.

Services were 4.1 percent higher compared to last June, also down from a rate of 4.7 percent last month. Non-energy industrial goods were about 0.7 percent more expensive, keeping that rate unchanged.

Dutch citizens also saw 5.7 percent higher prices when spending money abroad, a marginal increase in the annual rate. The category accounts for international transportation, accommodations, cafes, restaurants, and food purchased while outside of the Netherlands.

The flash estimate from the CBS does not take into account price fluctuations associated with home ownership, instead using the European HICP model to deliver a quick calculation. The inflation figure taking into account the consumer price index (CPI), which also includes home ownership and rental fees, will be released next week.

Annual inflation figures released on Wednesday were delayed, and only announced at around noon. The figures, were due out at 6:30 a.m., but maintenance at a data center in Almere led to the postponement, according to ANP.

This was the same data center on Rondebeltweg that was hit be a major fire on May 7. The CBS was one of several organizations impacted by the fire.

The maintenance work also meant the CBS had to delay updating the data tables on their Statline service to early Thursday morning. CPI figures for June will be released on Tuesday.
