Hundreds gather in Schiedam for silent march honoring 13-year-old stabbing victim

A silent march in Schiedam on Friday evening honored 13-year-old Joni, who was fatally stabbed last week. Hundreds of people gathered at Bachplein at 7 p.m., dressed in white and carrying white balloons and roses, as requested by the victim’s family.

Joni was stabbed on February 23 on Fjorddal and later died in the hospital from his injuries. The suspect, also a 13-year-old boy from Schiedam, remains in custody.

The march, attended by family, friends, classmates, and neighbors, moved quietly through the streets. Police estimated around 700 participants. Spectators stood along the route, observing in silence.

A white car adorned with balloons led the procession. Behind it, Joni’s parents and sister walked, wearing shirts printed with his image. The family’s grief was said to be visible as they moved toward the site of the attack.

Residents of Fjorddal had illuminated the area with candles. A week after the incident, the site remained covered in flowers. The march ended there, where support workers from Slachtofferhulp were present to assist those struggling with emotions.

To support Joni’s family, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched. Organizer Kay Bockkom wrote, “Besides the emotional loss, there are also financial burdens. We want to help cover the costs of the gravestone and other unexpected expenses.”

By Sunday morning, 6273 euros have been raised. “Every donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated. Let’s show them they are not alone,” the campaign message read.
