Several people fall ill at Zaandam restaurant, cause unknown
Dozens of people fell ill at a packed Zaandam bar early Sunday morning, prompting a full evacuation and emergency response. Authorities suspect tear gas may have been released, but the cause remains under investigation.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at Café De Bonte Hen on the Dam, where about 100 people were attending a performance by DJ Sjorleone. Witnesses reported that several patrons began experiencing burning eyes and coughing fits as soon as a smoke machine was activated.
Emergency services arrived quickly, sealing off part of the Dam with police tape. The fire department evacuated and ventilated the venue while conducting air quality tests. The results of those tests have not yet been disclosed. A hazardous materials advisor was also called to the scene.
Ambulance personnel treated multiple individuals, and at least two were transported to the hospital for further evaluation. Visitors from the neighboring Café More were also temporarily evacuated as a precaution.
By 3:30 a.m., both establishments were cleared for reopening, though De Bonte Hen remained closed for the rest of the night. Patrons were later allowed to return to retrieve their belongings.
