Teenager hits cop on head with hammer after robbing Zaandam electronics store
A 17-year-old boy hit a police officer on the head with a hammer multiple times after robbing an electronics store in Zaandam on Tuesday. The cop needed medical treatment, but did not have to be admitted to the hospital, the police said. The boy and his accomplice, a 13-year-old from Amsterdam, were arrested.
The two boys robbed a store on Gedempte Gracht in Zaandam at around 2:00 p.m. The 17-year-old from Zaandam and his young accomplice smashed display cases with a hammer and ran off with several phones.
Police officers in plainclothes were conducting an exercise in the area and saw the masked teenagers fleeing the scene. A cop gave chase on foot and caught up to the older boy. He vehemently resisted arrest and hit the cop on the head with the hammer several times.
The officer managed to keep hold of the boy until his colleagues arrived to arrest him. A bystander caught the younger boy and handed him over to the police.
Both were arrested and taken to a police station for questioning. The police returned the stolen phones to the shop.
