Storm Éowyn to bring wind gusts of up to 100 km/h on Friday in the Netherlands
The Netherlands will be affected by very strong winds as a result of Storm Éowyn. Wind gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour are expected on Friday as a result of the storm, which will arrive in the Netherlands after sweeping across the British Isles. The wind strength is expected to peak in the afternoon in the Netherlands, according to WeerOnline.
The website expects Friday morning gusts already reaching around 70 km/h across the coastal provinces, gaining in power first along the northwestern coast of Noord-Holland. By mid-afternoon, the gusts will rise to a consistent 90 kilometers per hour, and then peaking at up to 100 km/h, the website predicted. The storm force gusts will begin to dissipate by the end of the afternoon.
Most of Ireland is already under the most severe Status Red weather warning for Storm Éowyn covering Friday morning, said Irish meteorological service Met Éireann. "Gale to storm force southerly winds becoming westerly will bring severe, damaging and extremely destructive gusts in excess of 130km/h."
Northern Ireland was placed under the Amber Warning by the Met Office in the United Kingdom along with northern England, northern Wales, and the central and southern regions of Scotland. That warning will remain in effect for most of Friday.
The Dutch meteorological institute, KNMI, has yet to issue a weather warning for the Netherlands. The institute is expecting somewhat inclement weather on Thursday evening, but has not issued an updated forecast related to Storm Éowyn on Friday. The day will also be cloudy with periods of rain. WeerOnline predicted the heavy winds will disappear as Storm Éowyn travels towards Norway.
A day earlier, calm weather is expected on Thursday, with mostly moderate winds. Most areas are expected to be dry, and there will be some sunshine. There can be some rainfall in the northeast and eastern parts of the country in the evening. The wind will blow strongly on the coast from the southwest to the west, and heavy wind gusts of around 80 km/h can occur.
Strong winds are also expected to return to the Netherlands on Monday. It is not yet clear how strong those winds will be.
Storm Éowyn was designed by the KNMI. They have given storms a name since 2019 in collaboration with the Met Office and Met Éireann. The storm names were submitted from visitors at the KNMI stand at the Impact Fair held in Utrecht in April.
The name Éowyn came from the Lord of the Rings films and is an Irish name, but the decision to give the storm this name was made by the KNMI. The visitor who suggested Éowyn gives the reason: "I think it is a very beautiful but unique girl's name, and it is also on my list for my future children."
