A 19-year-old man from Almelo, the Netherlands, was killed early Sunday morning in a fatal accident on the A30 highway near Schüttorf, just over the border from the Netherlands. The teenager was struck by a vehicle after stepping out of a stationary car and walking across the highway.
According to German police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 2:38 a.m. when a 32-year-old man and his 19-year-old Dutch passenger were traveling on the A30 highway toward the Netherlands.
For reasons that remain unclear, the vehicle came to a stop on the shoulder of the highway, and the 19-year-old passenger exited the car. As he walked across the highway, he was struck by another vehicle.
The victim, identified as a student from Het Erasmus school in Almelo, was pronounced dead at the scene. The school sent an email to parents and guardians on Sunday to inform them of the tragic loss. "Due to this, we would like to offer students (and parents/guardians) the opportunity to talk about it and be together," the school said. A gathering took place Sunday evening, with further moments of remembrance scheduled for Monday morning.
The other vehicle involved in the collision contained four individuals aged 28, 23, 42, and 44. According to the police, all four suffered minor injuries in the accident. Authorities temporarily closed the highway for several hours as they investigated the scene.
