Last year saw the fewest burglaries in the Netherlands since 2012

Last year saw the fewest burglaries in the Netherlands since this has been tracked. The police registered around 22,300 break-ins of homes in 2024. That is almost 500 less than the year before and the lowest number since the police started tracking the numbers in 2012. This is proven by an analysis by the ANP.

The number of burglaries has been dropping for years. Police registered more than 90,000 cases in 2012, which is around 251 incidents a day. This number has dropped continuously until the coronavirus pandemic year of 2021.

Since then, the number of burglaries has been between 22,000 and 24,000 annually. There was an average of 61 burglaries a day last year.

The number of burglaries dropped in most of the large municipalities. There were a quarter fewer break-ins in Rotterdam compared to 2023. It was below 1,000 for the first time. There were almost 4,500 burglaries in the city in 2012.

Groningen, Nijmegen, and Utrecht also had significantly fewer burglaries last year than the year before.

However, this was not the case in all the big cities. Breda, Tilburg, and especially Almere saw an increase in burglaries registered by the police. Almere, which is the largest municipality of Flevoland, saw 113 more burglaries than in 2023. That is the most significant increase in years in the city.

Burglaries were most common in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Tilburg last year. In proportion to the number of inhabitants, it happened most often in Gooise Laren, Rozendaal in Gelderland, Amstelveen, and Blaricum. These municipalities are all in the top ten of the highest average income per inhabitant.
