Two more arrests made for riots at Plein ’40-’45 in Amsterdam

Police have made two more arrests in connection with the riots that took place last November at Plein ’40-’45 in Amsterdam. The suspects are both from Amsterdam and are 16 and 18 years old. They are accused of public violence, just like seven other suspects who had already been arrested for the riots.

The two suspects will be brought before the examining magistrate, who will decide whether they will have to remain in custody for a longer period of time.

The riots in Nieuw-West, Amsterdam, broke out on the evening of November 11 and followed the violence that surrounded the Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv football match days earlier.

Groups of young people destroyed objects at Plein ’40-’45, and heavy fireworks resulted in a tram catching fire. A man was also dragged off his bike and assaulted.

Seven men were arrested in December for the riots. No passersby were injured, but one of the rioters had to be treated while setting off a firework.
