Record-breaking amount of payments made via ABN Amro app Tikkie in 2024

Dutch people used the bank payment app Tikkie more than ever this year, breaking the record that was set last year. This was reported by ABN Amro, the bank that owns the payment app. The total fee paid via the app has also never been this high. Just like was the case last year, most payment requests were sent for food, lunches, and groceries.

People do not have to be ABN Amro customers to use Tikkie, everybody with a Dutch bank account can use the app. Other banks like ING and Rabobank also offer their own payment request service.

ABN AMRO has determined that 157 million payment requests were settled via Tikkie this year for an amount of 7.4 billion euros. This brings the average value of a payment request to 47.28 euros, over 3 euros more than last year. Almostnine out of ten Tikkies were paid within a day this year, 64 percent within an hour, the bank calculated.

The busiest day was on Friday, May 24, though the bank could not provide a clear explanation for this. Some 648,000 requests were paid via the app, with many Tikkies on that date involving terms like, “food” and “groceries.”

ABN Amro pointed out that a relatively high proportion of payments made using Tikkie are made towards the end of the month, when the salary has been deposited again. Many people also receive holiday pay in May.

Also, over a million Tikkies were sent for less than one euro, including some for food and drinks. However, the majority of these micro payment requests were sent to pay for the use of a toilet on King’s Day.

Tikkies for small amounts are mainly sent during events, explained Moreno Kensmil, the head of Tikkie’s marketing. “For example, on King’s Day, when people make their toilet available to others for a fee.” But also at the flea markets, where visitors can pay via the app.
