Explosion prompts closure of home in Vlaardingen
A home on Robert Schumanring in Vlaardingen has been closed indefinitely by Mayor Bert Wijbenga following an explosion early Saturday morning. The blast caused significant damage, leading to the evacuation of 18 apartment units. Residents have since returned, but the municipality has provided victim support for those affected.
“This is outrageous,” Wijbenga said in a statement. “Many residents, including small children, were truly shaken.”
Authorities confirmed the incident caused no injuries, though two individuals were evaluated by paramedics. The explosion heavily damaged several nearby homes, and evacuated residents were temporarily sheltered in a nearby care facility.
The closure of the affected property is described by the municipality as a precautionary measure “to minimize the risk of recurrence and ensure neighborhood safety.” Police are conducting a forensic investigation, and local officials are considering additional security measures.
The blast follows months of similar incidents in Vlaardingen, many linked to criminal activity. The AD reported the attack may have targeted the residence of a relative of Schiedam drug criminal René F., though police have not confirmed this. Investigators are still determining the motive.
Mayor Wijbenga’s office reiterated the community's concerns, emphasizing the ongoing impact of the violence. "This type of crime has no place in our neighborhoods,” he said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
