Zeeland residents the most likely to donate to charity, Limburg residents least likely
Last year, 76 percent of Netherlands residents aged 15 or older said their household donated money or goods to a charity. Zeeland counted the most donors at 76 percent and Limburg the least at 68 percent, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported. Limburg was the only province with less than 70 percent donors.
The share of the Dutch population who donate to charity has increased in recent years. In 2021, 68 percent of the population were donors. That increased to 73 percent in 2021 and 76 percent last year. This concerns a fixed or once-off contribution from the household in the form of money or goods.
People with higher incomes are more likely to donate to charity as they have more disposable income. In the highest income group, 82 percent of those aged 15 and older donated to charity last year, compared to 57 percent of people in the lowest income group.
Older people are also more likely to donate (80% of 65 to 75-year-olds) than young people (58% of 15 to 25-year-olds). And women (76%) are more likely to donate than (69%) men. City dwellers (68%) are less likely to donate than residents of less urban (76%) and non-urban municipalities (74%).
