Busy morning rush hour with many accidents; Fatal crash with four vehicles on A16

Traffic piled up on Dutch roads on Tuesday morning due to multiple accidents. On the A16 near the Ridderkerk interchange, an accident involving four vehicles left one person dead and several others injured. The police arrested one of the drivers.

At 8:42 a.m., the ANWB recorded 167 traffic jams covering 1,010 kilometers of Dutch roads. That is “busier than usual” for a Tuesday morning, a spokesperson for the traffic service told ANP.

There is a lot of traffic around Rotterdam due to an accident involving four vehicles on the A16 near Ridderkerk. One person died and several others were injured. The accident caused traffic to pile up on the A4 and A20 with delays of over an hour, according to the Rijkswaterstaat.

The accident involved four vehicles, including a truck and a motorcycle. The police arrested one of the drivers. The emergency services closed several lanes on the A16 south to help the victims, investigate, and clear the wreckage.

There were also accidents with injuries on the A10, resulting in bad traffic on the A1, A4, and A9 around Amsterdam. Accidents also caused traffic jams of over an hour on the A2, A50, and A58.

Rond Amsterdam zijn momenteel op meerdere trajecten rijstroken dicht voor de afhandeling van pech- en ongevallen. Op de A1, A4, A9 en A10 gaat het daarom een stuk langzamer. The many accidents may be related to the weather. While there were no freezing conditions causing icy roads on Tuesday morning, the roads were still wet from rain and a large part of the morning rush hour happened in the dark, with the sun only rising at 8:28 a.m.

The ANWB also expects the evening rush hour to be busy on Tuesday. Tuesdays are typically crowded on the roads as it is an in-office day for many hybrid workers. There are also roadworks on multiple highways, including the A9 between Diemen and Alkmaar, the A10 at De Nieuwe Meer interchange, the A30 from Ede to Barneveld, and the A59 from Barneveld toward the Zonzeel interchange.

The traffic service also warned that Thursday’s evening rush hour will be busier than typical as people rush home for Sinterklaas celebrations. Many people are also taking Friday off to turn Sinterklaas into a long weekend.
