Video: Zeeland firefighters hurt after partial building collapse during response
Two firefighters were injured when a wall collapsed while they were fighting a large fire in an agricultural barn in the Zeeland village of Driewegen. They were taken to a hospital by ambulance. The other firefighters in their team were relieved by another firefighting team and the mayor took them in, Zeeland Veilig, the local office for the emergency services, said on X. It is unclear how badly the firefighters were hurt.
The emergency services received the first report about the fire on Trenteweg at around 9:00 p.m. The fire raged in a barn containing agricultural vehicles and hay, located next to a home. The residents of the home managed to get outside safely by themselves.
The fire department responded with three fire trucks, a water tanker, and a crane truck. When they saw the fire was spreading, the fire brigade escalated the situation to a Grip 1, meaning that the present emergency services all work under a single commanding officer, and deployed two more fire trucks. Firefighters found a gas fire in the barn and called in grid operator Stedin to shut off the gas supply.
Shortly after midnight, Zeeland Veilig reported that the fire had largely been extinguished. Some hay was still burning, so firefighters were still at the scene. The home next to the barn could be saved.
