Garbage truck hits American tourist, 69, on Amsterdam canal; Woman killed, driver held

A garbage truck ran over a tourist on Passeerdersgracht in Amsterdam on Monday afternoon. The victim, a 69-year-old woman from the United States, died at the scene. The driver was arrested.

The police’s call center received multiple reports about the accident in the city center at around 1:00 p.m. on Monday. The woman was walking on Passeerdersgracht when the garbage truck hit her.

Multiple emergency services responded to the accident, but it was too late to help the woman. She died at the scene. Parool identified her as a 69-year-old tourist from the United States.

The police arrested the truck driver and are investigating what happened.

Many people witnessed the accident. The police called in victim support for those who needed it.
