Snacks on KLM flights will remain free for now, despite cost savings plan

It is still unclear whether passengers on KLM flights within Europe will need to pay for a drink or snack on board in the future. This was said by a spokesperson for the airline. KLM announced on Thursday morning that it would investigate its onboard catering offering in order to eventually generate at least 100 million euros in additional annual revenue.

KLM has noticed that passengers are sometimes not satisfied with the food and drink options on board. That is why various concepts are being considered. “We are now looking at how we can change the catering in Europe, for example, by offering a more varied range of options. But we are also looking into having passengers order something before the flight,” the spokesperson explained. The goal is to implement the new catering system at the end of next year.

Currently, KLM offers a drink and a snack on European flights for economy-class passengers. On longer flights, passengers are also given a sandwich. On intercontinental flights, travelers are given a meal, but they can also ask for an extra snack or drink during the flight.

Luchtvaartnieuws reported last month that KLM was considering changing its catering options in economy class on European flights. According to the aviation news website, one possibility was passengers getting a free cup of coffee, tea, or water and a small snack.

Other drinks and meals would have to be paid for in this case. However, KLM indicated at the time that there would be no major changes in the short term.
