Study: 92% of Amsterdam residents encounter rudeness in the city

A striking 92% of Amsterdam residents report experiencing rudeness in the city, with most believing it has increased over time. Reckless e-bikers and fat bikers are seen as the primary offenders, according to research conducted for Het Parool. Interestingly, locals rate their own politeness quite highly, giving themselves an average score of 8 out of 10.

In a study commissioned by Het Parool, the statistics bureau O&S surveyed 1,389 Amsterdam residents last month. This research closely mirrors a similar study conducted in 2016, allowing for a direct comparison. So, has Amsterdam become ruder over the past eight years?

The findings reveal that nearly all Amsterdam residents (92%) have encountered rudeness at some point. Forty percent experience it occasionally, 30% regularly, and 22% frequently or very often.

On the contrary, in 2016, 87% reported encountering rudeness, with only 10% stating they experienced it frequently. Thus, the city has indeed become somewhat ruder—or, in other words, even ruder.

However, some fortunate individuals who rarely venture out report that 7% claim they never encounter rude behavior today, down from 13% in 2016.
