Greek authorities searching for Dutch tourist, 65, missing on Samos
A 65-year-old Dutch tourist is missing on the Greek island of Samos. She never returned from a hike on Thursday. The Greek authorities have launched a search and rescue for the Dutch woman and are very concerned, given the high temperatures on the island this summer.
According to the Greek City Times, the Dutch woman was staying at a hotel in the Pythagoreio. On Thursday morning, she told a friend that she was going to hike around the Eupalinian Aqueduct, a well-known ancient site near the town.
She never returned to the hotel. Her friends alerted the authorities when they couldn’t reach her by phone.
Rescue teams are scouring the area around the Eupalinian mine with sniffer dogs and drones. So far, there is no sign of the woman.
The authorities are concerned about the tourist’s chances of survival. The high-temperature has hovered around 35 degrees Celsius on Samos this week. The low temperature early Friday morning was still 27 degrees.
The 65-year-old woman is the second Dutch tourist to go missing during a hike on Samos this summer. In June, a 74-year-old Dutchman was found dead in a ravine in Limniona almost a week after he disappeared.
