Eredivisie teams working in the transfer window to prepare for new season
The transfer window is open, and with the European Championships just finished, teams will be looking to make moves to improve their chances in the next Eredivisie season, which starts on August 9.
There will be a lot of change in the country's big three clubs. Ajax and Feyenoord will both enter the season with new managers. Danish manager Brian Priske will take charge of Feyenoord after their former manager, Arne Slot, left the club for Liverpool in the English Premier League. He will have to do it without midfielder Mats Wieffer, who joined Brighton for 30 million last summer.
Ajax is also under new management after a disastrous season last year, during which they finished fifth. Italian manager Francesco Farioli has joined the club from OGC Nice in France. The Amsterdammers start their season on July 25 when they face Vojvodina in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
PSV will still be considered the team to beat. Peter Bosz's side lost just one game in the Eredivisie last season as they stormed to the league. They have sold Andre Ramalho and Hirving Lozano while signing Ryan Flamingo and Couhaib Driouech from Utrecht and Excelsior, respectively.
FC Twente will be hoping to qualify for the UEFA Champions League qualification rounds. The Enschede side had a very successful first season under manager Joseph Oosting last season, finishing fourth.
There is a summer of change in Alkmaar as AZ sold last season's Eredivisie top scorer, Vangelis Pavlidis, to Benfica. In addition, stalwart right-back Yukinari Sugawara has left the club for English club Southampton, and first-choice goalkeeper Maty Ryan left for AS Roma. The Alkmaarders have strengthened with young Irish striker Troy Parrot, who impressed for Excelsior last season.
It was a less-than-beneficial summer for Go Ahead Eagles, too. After a historic season in which the club achieved European football through sporting position for the first time in its history, they were dealt a blow when their manager Rene Hake left to become Erik ten Hag's assistant at Manchester United in England. The Deventer club will play their first European match against SK Brann next week.
SC Heerenveen will also be the subject of attention as former Oranje forward and Eredivisie winner Robin van Persie performs in his first job as a first-team manager at the club.
The promoted side, NAC Breda, is the favorite for relegation with the bookmakers. NAC were promoted to the Eredivisie after winning the playoffs last season, in which they relegated Excelsior.
Even though Almere City had a successful first season in the Eredivisie last season, finishing 13th, the departure of their manager, Alex Pastoor, has ensured that bookmakers have them as the second favorite to go down.
The other two promoted sides, Willem II and FC Groningen, were the next favorites to get relegated.
Groningen kicks off the Eredivisie season when they face NAC Breda on Friday, August 8.
