Sharp drop in shoplifting at Jumbo; Security measures working, supermarket says

Jumbo's extra security measures against shoplifting are working, the supermarket chain reported in its half-year figures on Thursday. The loss from theft has fallen by over 30 percent, Jumbo said.

In January, Jumbo reported that it lost 100 million euros to theft in 2023. In February, the chain announced extra measures, including more cameras and people carrying out random checks.

Jumbo was also experimenting with extra security guards, receipt and bag checks after self-checkout, and AI software to recognize deviating behavior in customers. The company said that it had extended some pilots but did not specify which.

Jumbo’s turnover in the first half of the year amounted to 6 billion euros, 1 percent more than in the first six months of 2023. The supermarket chain’s market share remained about the same at 21 percent.
