Ian Maatsen replaces Frenkie de Jong in Oranje's Euorpean Championship selection

Ian Maatsen will replace Frenkie de Jong in the Dutch national team’s selection for the European Championship, Voetbal Inside reported. Oranje is leaving for Germany for the tournament today.

National coach Ronald Koeman had to drop De Jong because he did not recover in time from an ankle injury he sustained in April. Two weeks ago, Maatsen was one of the last two dropouts from the potential selection. The 22-year-old left wing-back has been playing for Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea since the second half of the season.

The national teams had to submit their final European Championship selection to UEFA by June 7. However, players who become ill or sustain an injury can still be replaced if a team doctor and a doctor from UEFA’s medical committee confirm that the player will be unable to play for the duration of the tournament.

For Oranje, the European Championship starts on Sunday with a match against Poland. The Netherlands will also face France on June 21 and Austria on June 25 in the group stage.

The Dutch national team will train for the frist time in the AOK Stadium in Wolfsburg this evening.
