Woman on TikTok fries chicken on the train and claims it is allowed

The best thing about long train journeys is the snacks you can eat. Most people resort to the simplest snack options, such as sandwiches, something sweet, or a coffee to go. For Dutch TikTokker Isabelle Joëlla, however, this is too boring. She, on the other hand, prepares drumsticks in a pan on the train, which has now gone viral. Even though the video caused many laughs, there is now a heated debate about whether this is allowed. An NS spokesperson sets the record straight.

Cooking her meals fresh on the train with an electric pan is already part of the status quo for Isabelle Joëlla. Before the viral chicken video, she had already prepared pasta on the train, which 3 million people watched. This received more positive reactions than now.

Many TikTok users have complained about Joëlla's ignorance, as she did not pay attention to whether her actions were disturbing the other passengers. Joëlla, however, believes she is in the right.

According to NS spokesperson Oscar van Elferen, there are clear rules on how to behave on public transport. However, it is not explicitly stated that electric pans may not be used on the train. "But that is not the intention," he tells Editie NL.

However, in this case, the basic rules can be quickly pointed out: "You should not be a burden to anyone and you should not create unsafe situations or nuisances. If you fry a chicken leg, that is the case. We don't want to see that on the train. Many people understand that well; there is almost no need for rules for that," explains Van Elferen.

The NS spokesman clarifies that cooking chicken in an electric pan would be a nuisance simply because of the smell and the danger posed by electric (cooking) appliances.
