Technicians, nurses in high demand despite increasing unemployment

Despite rising unemployment due to the coroanvirus crisis, there are still professions in desperate need for workers. Machine technicians, specialized nurses, and MBO nurses are still in high demand, NOS reports based on its own analysis of benefits agency UWV's labor market tension indicator.

Despite the coronavirus crisis, shortages on the labor market have not changed significantly. Professions for which shortages were predicted before the crisis are still the professions with the most open vacancies.

The UWV expects that unemployment will increase further, but the main professions with staff shortages will remain unchanged. "These are professions that have been tight for a long time, and for which specific training is required," UWV labor market advisor Nicole van der Goorbergh said to the broadcaster. "There is little shift in that."

In addition to technicians and nurses, there are also many open vacancies for electronic engineers, construction workers, electricians, production managers in industry and construction, and software- and app developers.

During the coronavirus crisis, the demand for personnel declined across the board. This is the biggest such decrease in the past five years, the UWV said.
