Strong winds topple trees in NL, Whirlwind spotted on Dutch border
Strong gusts of wind damaged mainly trees in the coastal provinces of the Netherlands on Sunday. As the trees are carrying their spring leaves, they are extra vulnerable to winds. A code yellow warning is still in effect for Zeeland and Zuid-Holland. According to meteorological institute KNMI, these provinces will face strong winds until around 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
In Zaandam, the fire brigade had to respond to tree branches falling around a bus station, AD reports. It was therefore decided to have buses stop a distance away from the station for a time. In Amsterdam, the fire brigade responded to multiple reports of damage to trees and buildings, a spokesperson for the fire department said to the newspaper.
The Kaag en Braassem police closed down Alkemadelaan in Oude Wetering due to fallen branches on the road. In Vlaardingen, a large tree fell on a car parked next to a house on Zeelandlaan. The roof of the house was also damaged. The Mijdrecht fire brigade had to partly cut down a tree because it looked on the verge of toppling.
A whirlwind was also recorded just across the Dutch border with Belgium. It was spotted in the north of the province of Antwerp, in the border area near Loenhout and Zundert.
