Hague's Malieveld being restored after major protests

The restoration of the Malieveld in The Hague started on Wednesday with the sowing of 600 kilograms of grass seeds. The field was severely damaged during mass protests by farmers and construction workers over the past weeks, AD reports.

The grass seeds were sowed by AH Vrij, the manager of the field. Wednesday was chosen to start because no rain is expected in the coming days. The seeds will still germinate in the cold temperatures.

Visitors are asked to be careful about where they walk on the field in the coming period. The most vulnerable areas will be cordoned off. Stadsbosbeheer expects that the grass will be completely recovered by next spring.

The Malieveld embankments will be refurbished in the spring, when the weather turns dryer. The slopes along the field were heavily damaged by tractors driving over it.

Multiple participants of both protests indicated that they want to help pay for the damage, according to AD.
