Flights between Amsterdam, Barcelona restart after Catalunya airport unrest

Flights from Schiphol to Barcelona departed again on Tuesday morning, after many flights to the Catalan city were canceled on Monday evening due to unrest. At 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, a Transavia flight departed from Schiphol to Barcelona, followed by a Veuling flight an hour later. Other flights to the Spanish city for Tuesday are all still on schedule, according to the Schiphol website.

Unrest in Barcelona was prompted by long prison sentences imposed on politicians involved in the struggle for Catalan independence on Monday, the Telegraaf reports. . Catalan demonstrators did not accept those sentences and took to the streets, according to the newspaper.

On Monday evening, at least two flights from Schiphol to Barcelona were scrapped due to the violent protests, one by KLM and one by Vueling. A KLM spokesperson told the Telegraaf on Monday that the airline is keeping a close eye on the situation. "We only adjust our flight schedule if it is necessary for safety."

Schiphol advises people traveling to Barcelona in the coming days to check their flight information with their airline. "It is wise to do so before leaving for the airport", a Schiphol spokesperson said to the newspaper.
