Police give mother of escaped psych prisoner extra security

The mother of the psychiatric prisoner who escaped from a clinic in Den Dolder on Saturday, is now being protected by the police, the man's sister said on Pauw. "She now lives with the door locked, windows closed. His escape is a deprivation of freedom for us", sister Jannienne said. She said that M. always focused his aggression on their mother, who is now living in fear.

Peter M. was serving a sentence of institutionalized psychiatric treatment at the Fivoor clinic in Den Dolder. He was convicted in 2017 for threatening to blow up a train station and attacking someone on the street. M. is psychotic and suffers from schizophrenia, his family previously told newspaper AD. On Saturday he got away during unsupervised leave from the clinic. On Wednesday the police released a photo of him. "If you see him, do not approach him yourself, but call 112 right away", the police said.

The director of Fivoor said that M. does not pose a great risk to his environment, according to NOS. "If we thought he was a life-threatening man, we wouldn't have let him go on unaccompanied leave", he said on Wednesday. The director called M. a "low risk patient".

"I have to laugh a little about that", Jannienne said on Pauw. "I think it would be good that when patients are admitted, clinics also turn to the family. To ask how someone really is." According to Jannienne, her brother needs to get his medication on schedule. "If he gets his medicine well and takes it, he's a nice guy. If he doesn't get it, he's a weird mess", she said. "He is dangerous if he is not given medication, then he gets delusions and psychoses. And he will drink if he is not supervised."

Jannienne last saw her brother on Thursday last week. "I visited him with my mother and daughter. Then he said: 'I don't belong here, I don't want to be here, if I get the chance I will leave'." She reported it to the clinic that same day.

The woman is very disappointed in how the clinic handled the situation. "We were not called on Saturday", she said. They only found out that her brother escaped when the police showed up at her mother's door on Monday. "Her house was turned inside out to find him." When she contacted the clinic on Monday, they refused to say anything 'in the context of privacy'. She only heard on Tuesday that her brother indeed escaped.

M. escaped from the same clinic that was treating Michael P. when he abducted, raped and killed 25-year-old Anne Faber in 2017. Problems in the treatment of Michael P. prompted the Ministry for Legal Protection to implement stricter rules for psychiatric prisoners.
