Dutch railway: Few or no trains will run on Tuesday; “Serious nuisance” for passengers

NS advises travelers not to depend on train traffic on Tuesday, due to a nationwide public transit strike for a better pension system. The Dutch rail company expects that the strike will result in little to no trains running on Tuesday. NS warns of "serious nuisance" for passengers.

"Because we don't know how many people will strike, we can't say which trains will and which trains won't run", NS said on its website. "We therefore can't make a reliable schedule and advise travelers not to take the train on 28 May."

On Tuesday employees of NS, city-, and regional transit companies across the country will strike for a better pension system. The strike will start at 5:00 a.m. and last 24 hours. The unions want retirement age to be frozen at 66 years, and for people with taxing jobs to retire earlier. According to the trade unions, millions of people with physically taxing jobs and people who work in shifts have little chance of reaching retirement age healthily.

"We understand the concerns about pensions, but we regret that once again a means was chosen that is will hinder our travelers greatly", NS said. "Travelers become the victims of a conflict in which NS is not a party."
