Minister wants explanation for €70,000 farewell party at Groningen Univ.

The University of Groningen set a total of 70 thousand euros aside for a farewell party for the rector of the university, according to student movement DAG. Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven of Education, Culture and Science asked the university for an explanation, NU.nl reports.

According to the student movement, "in times of cutbacks and towering work pressure for teachers" the 70 thousand euros can be spent in other ways. "Instead, the Executive Board chooses to organize a party for itself."

The Minister is also confused by the amount. "At first glance, this amount is inconsistent with a sober and efficient use of educational resources. I will ask the University of Groningen for clarification", she said, according to the newspaper.

The farewell party for rector Elmer Sterken is planned for next month.

University spokesperson Jorien Bakker told NU.nl that the amount in questioned is not intended solely for the farewell party, but also for the rectorship transfer and for public activities for the students. It is also just a budget, so it is not certain that the entire amount will be spent, she said.
