Boy, 5, hurt in fall from fairground attraction

A 5-year-old boy was injured when he fell out of a fairground attraction in the Limburg village of Helden on Saturday evening. The boy was hospitalized with a concussion, but was released again on Sunday to continue his recovery at home, the mayor of municipality Peel en Maas, which covers Helden, said to RTL Niuews.

The attraction in question, called Speedway, consists of connected carts that go in a circle at a high speed. The operator told De Limburger that the boy stood up during the ride, lost his balance and fell out. He landed with his head on the sidewalk. The ride was recently approved, the operator said.

The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA is investigating the accident. The fair in Helden, which is on until Tuesday, was open again on Sunday, though the ride is halted until the NVWA investigation is done.
