Windy Monday: Hundreds of Schiphol flights delayed, canceled; carnival parades postponed

Strong winds had a major impact on air traffic at Schiphol Airport on Monday. Over a hundred flights were canceled, and hundreds more were delayed.

By 1:30 p.m. a total of 52 departures and 54 arrivals at the Amsterdam airport were canceled. The cancellations primarily affected KLM, who announced 72 cancelations on Sunday, but several other airlines were also affected. A total of 220 departures were delayed between midnight and 4:05 p.m., and 302 arrivals were delayed between midnight and 8:00 p.m.

On Twitter, Schiphol advises travelers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.

The wind also impacted carnival parades in the northern provinces.

Parades planned in the municipality of Oss for Monday morning were all postponed due to the strong winds, mayor Wobine Buijs announced, according to NU.nl. This included carnival parades in Macharen, Oijen and Overlangel, which fall under the municipality of Oss. The carnival market in Roosendaal was canceled. Carnival parades in Den Bosch, Breda and Dinteloord will continue as planned on Monday afternoon.

The carnival parades in Hulst, Zeeland will also continue as planned, according to Omroep Zeeland.

The organizers of the parade in the Drenthe town of Barger-Compascuum had to cancel the parade due to the weather conditions, RTV Drenthe reports.

The Code Yellow wind advisory released by the national meteorological office KNMI was still in effect in the northern provinces on Monday afternoon. It was set to expire between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. for people in Noord-Holland, Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe.
