Russian journalist, human rights activist arrested at Schiphol: Report

Two Russian women were arrested at Schiphol airport on Monday morning, independent Russian newspaper Novaja Gazeta reports. The Koninklijke Marechausee could not confirm the arrests to the Volkskrant.

According to the Russian newspaper, the women in question are investigative journalist Jelena Milasjina and activist Milana Boechajeva. The journalist is known for revelations about the persecutions of gay people in the Russian republic of Chechnya. The activist works for human rights organization Memorial. They traveled to Amsterdam to talk with human rights activists about Syrian refugees, according to the newspaper.

A spokesperson for the Koninklijke Marechaussee, a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for border security including at airports, told the Volkskrant that no one was arrested at Schiphol on Monday morning.
