Snow: Fewer trains, traffic problems, flight delays expected

The Netherlands is expected to get some snow this morning, and this will likely cause problems with all forms of travel. NS and ProRail are running fewer trains, Schiphol warns of flight delays, and public works department Rijkswaterstaat expects traffic problems, especially during evening rush hour. A code yellow warning for slick roads is in effect for the entire country.

"Because snow is predicted today, NS and ProRail are rather safe than sorry and are adjusting the timetable", NS said on its website. According to NU.nl, around 80 percent of the usual trains are running on Tuesday. "However, snowfall can lead to more annoyance for train passengers. That is why we advice travelers to keep an eye on the weather reports and consult the travel planner just before the trip. Take longer travel times or crowds in the train into account."

Schiphol warns that the snowfall may result in flights being delayed. Travelers are advised to check their flight status with their airline or on the Schiphol site or app before leaving for the airport.

The snowfall is expected to start at around 8:00 a.m. in the west of the Netherlands and them move across the country. Between 1 and 3 centimeters of snow is expected, with some places maybe getting up to 5 centimeters. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for icy and slick roads that may result from the snow. The warning is in effect for the entire country.

Rijkswaterstaat deployed 546 gritters and 350 snow plows to keep the highways free of snow throughout the day, RTL Nieuws reports. But the public works department is still expecting a number of traffic problems. Morning rush hour will be somewhat busier the usual, though the real problems are expected to occur during evening rush hour. The ANWB advises motorists to keep an eye on traffic information and to check their routes before starting their journey - some roads may be closed.
