Widening A1 highway between Apeldoorn & Almelo to take 10 years

Next month Rijkswaterstaat will start widening the A1 highway between Apeldoorn and the Azelo junction near Almelo. The 65 kilometer stretch of highway will be widened almost everywhere. This major job is expected to take 10 years to complete and cost around 400 million euros, NU.nl reports.

The A1 is one of the two main road links from the Randstad to the North and East European hinterland.

Rijkswaterstaat, the Netherlands' public works department, will start this major task by cutting down trees and relocating cables and pipelines along the entire route. Then the highway between Twello and Deventer will be widened to four lanes in both directions, and then the highway between Deventer and Rijssen will get three lanes on both sides.

The second phase of the project will start in 2024 with widening the highway between Apeldoorn and Twello and at Deventer. The aim is to finish this job in 2028.

Rijkswaterstaat and the contractor will hold information evenings in Rijssen-Holten and Twello next week Tuesday and Thursday. The project will particularly cause traffic problems around Deventer.
