A1 toward Amsterdam to see months of roadwork, drivers warned of 30–60 minute delays

Drivers on the A1 highway toward Amsterdam will face major disruption this summer. Rijkswaterstaat will carry out extensive maintenance between the Eemnes junction and the Muiderberg junction. Travel times are expected to increase by 30 minutes to one hour, NH reports.

The work started at 11 p.m. on July 3. It is scheduled to continue until 5 a.m. on Aug. 17. Traffic in the opposite direction will remain open throughout the entire period.

Officials are warning of heavy congestion and prolonged delays. They are urging drivers to avoid peak travel times when possible. They also recommend working from home when feasible, carpooling, or using public transportation.

The construction is divided into three stages. Each stage changes access conditions for traffic heading toward Amsterdam.

From 11 p.m. on July 3 to 5 a.m. on July 27, most entry ramps to the A1 in the direction of Amsterdam will be closed. Only two ramps will remain open: Naarden-West and Naarden-Vesting.

From July 27 to 7 a.m. on Aug. 5, the A1 toward Amsterdam will be fully closed. All entry ramps in that direction will also be closed.

From Aug. 5 to Aug. 17, limited access will return, but restrictions will remain severe. Only the Naarden-West entry ramp will be open for traffic heading toward Amsterdam. All other entry points will remain closed.

Rijkswaterstaat says the project includes replacement of asphalt and expansion joints. It also involves repairs to the road surface, bridges, and viaducts along the route.
