Father accused of killing son, 12, had psychotic break, family says

Tevfik G., a 40-year-old man suspected of killing his 12-year-old son Bekiro in their Arnhem home on Saturday, had a psychotic break, according to his family. He should have been admitted to a care institution on Friday, his sister Kelly said to De Gelderlander.

Kelly was visiting G. and his sons at their home on Dragonstraat on Friday. The man was not doing well and she called the police. "They then decided that the situation was fine", she said to the newspaper. G. has been under treatment for anxiety disorders these past two years and had psychotic breaks in the past. "He gets medication, but it doesn't work properly."

According to Kelly the police and the crisis department of mental health institution Pro Persona misjudged the situation. "If they had listened to me, this drama would not have happened."

The police confirmed that they twice responded to the home on Friday. There was no need for police intervention at the first visit, and nobody was home when authorities visited a second time, police said.

According to De Gelderlander, after killing his youngest son in their home, G. chased after his 15-year-old son in the neighborhood. There's a trail of blood to show this. Local residents witnessed the chase and it caused quite a bit of unrest in the neighborhood, the newspaper writes.

Acquaintances of the family are shocked by what happened. G. is known as a caring and loving father. G. is separated from his sons' mother. The two boys lived with him, according to the newspaper.
