Knife waving man triggers partial evacuation of Schiphol airport
Part of Schiphol airport was evacuated for a short time on Thursday evening after a man threatened bystanders with a knife. He also shouted that there was "something" in his bag. The Koninklijke Marechaussee arrested the man.
A video recorded by a bystander shows Marechaussee officers overpower the man and work him to the floor. The Koninklijke Marchaussee is a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for border security, including at airports.
While the Marechaussee had the situation under control very quickly, it was still "stressful", an employee of one of the stores on Schiphol Plaza said to RTL Nieuws. "We saw the the Marechaussee sneak bent over across the floor with a gun. When we asked what was going on, they said we'd better get away."
After the man's arrest a sniffer dog was brought in to check the man's bag. Nothing dangerous was found and the airport was opened to the public again.
