Stolen car crashes into tree during police chase; three hurt

A car crashed into a tree during a police chase in Foxwolde in Drenthe around 5:00 a.m. on Monday. The vehicle caught fire. Three people were injured, NU.nl reports.

The 23-year-old driver and a passenger were seriously injured. A third person sustained minor injuries.

Around 4:00 a.m. the police received a report that the car had been stolen. When officers spotted the car, they gave chase. The driver almost immediately collided with a tree, causing the car to catch fire.

One of the three people got trapped in the car. Police officers managed to free him. The other two were able to get out of the car themselves.

The man that sustained only minor injuries, a 22-year-old from Amsterdam, was arrested for theft. The other two have not yet been arrested, as they are still being treated in hospital. A blood test was done on the driver to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
