Approaching storms trigger code yellow warning

While the morning started out sunny in most of the Netherlands, thunderstorms are set to hit the country this afternoon. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for the entire country.

According to Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar, the storms will hit between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. "The thunderstorms will pull across the country from the south, so the rest of the country will only have its turn later", she said to RTL Nieuws. "There may be gusts of wind and perhaps hailstones of about two to three centimeters. Locally there can be a lot of rain, and because there is little wind, the storm will not blow away." This may result in considerable flooding, Kroon warns.

The KNMI's code yellow warning is in effect from 2:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. "Chance of lightning, hail, gusts and a lot of rain in a short time", the meteorological institute warns. "Traffic and outdoor activities can be hindered. Avoid open water and open areas, do not shelter under trees. Follow weather reports and warnings."
