Dozens of homes evacuated over explosive at ATM

The police evacuated dozens of homes in the Utrecht town of Leersum on Friday morning after a failed ATM bombing. The police believe that there still may be an explosive attached to the ATM. An explosive expert is on the way to investigate, the police said on Twitter.

Around 75 people had to leave their homes this morning. The ATM is located in a shopping center on Honingstraat. The evacuated residents were given shelter in a nursing home next to the shopping center, a spokesperson for the fire department said to the Telegraaf.

"We received a report about explosives at an ATM. We closed down the area and evacuated a number of homes as a precaution", a police spokesperson confirmed to RTL Nieuws. So far no damage was done. "The explosive has not gone off."

The police are looking for witnesses who saw the explosive being placed, or anything suspicious happening around the ATM.
