Delft team wins Bridgestone World Solar Challenge
The Nuon Solar Team from Delft won the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia for the 7th time. The Delft team's Nuna9 solar car crossed the finish line in Adelaide around 6:45 a.m. on Thursday, Dutch time, De Stentor reports.
This was the 14th edition of the official world championship for solar car racing.
It took the Nuon Solar Team four days and over six hours to complete the 3 thousand kilometer race. On the last day of racing, Nuon managed to increase their lead on the main competitors - Michigan from the United States, Tokai from Japan and Punch Powertrain from Belgium. The Red Shift from the University of Twente dropped away in the final class after receiving a 30 minute time penalty.
"Of course we were nervous. Something can always happen", Sharon van Luik of Nuon Solar Team said to De Stentor from Australia. "But it went great. We measured Nuna9's maximum speed today, 110 kilometers per hour. And all that on power from the sun, fantastic!"
