Pirate Bay access blocked by Dutch telecoms after court ruling

Dutch telecom providers Ziggo and XS4ALL are blocking access to torrent site The Pirate Bay after the court in The Hague ordered them to do so. Ziggo blocked the site on Wednesday, and XS4ALL plan to do so on Thursday, RTL Nieuws reports.

Ziggo clients who now try to surf to The Pirate Bay, are redirected to a Ziggo site with the title Yarrr - referring to the famous sound cartoon pirates make. "You're trying to visit a The Pirate Bay page. On 22 September the Hague Court obliged us to block access to the site", the website reads. According to NU.nl, the court gave the two providers 10 days to do so.

This is a temporary block - the case is currently at the Supreme Court, which will make the ultimate decision on whether blocking the torrent site is the right and most effective solution to put an end to copyright infringement by The Pirate Bay and its visitors. When the Supreme Court will rule is not yet known.

KPN told RTL that its clients can still access The Pirate Bay for the time being. The telecom company decided not to block the site yet, because The Hague court ruling only involved Ziggo and XS4ALL.
